Muses Shoes: An Inside Look

It’s the Wednesday before Mardi Gras. The energy in the city is electric; you can almost feel the glitter in the air as we rifle through our costume closets and hot glue our headpieces in preparation for the best week of the year. And for many seasoned locals, myself included, that week begins on Muses Thursday.

Tomorrow night, thousands of parade goers will flock to St. Charles Avenue with signs, t-shirts, and even fishing nets—all in hopes of catching a coveted Muses shoe. A lucky few will stumble home with glittered heel in hand, wrapped in plastic and carried with reverence. But where do those shoes come from? Who makes them? And how did Muses start in the first place?

We sat down with Weezie Porter, one of the founding members of the Krewe of Muses, to learn a little more about the iconic signature throw.

I’ll be honest with you, dear readers. Now that I’ve got a firsthand look at the shoe creation process…I want one even more. See y’all on the route, and

HAPPY MARDI GRAS!!!
